John Loengard, one of the great LIFE photographers, in his Manhattan apartment.

I showed him my work and he really liked half of it. Hated the other half. I’d say the glass was half full, wouldn’t you?

Meet John Loengard.

John Loengard was a Harvard Crimson Photographer when LIFE asked him to photograph a freighter grounded off Cape Cod. This was the very beginning of Loengard’s long association with the magazine. He photographed some of LIFE’s most iconic photo essays — including “The Shakers” and “Georgia O’Keefe.” He went on to become LIFE’s seventh picture editor. From there he also helped launch People and served as its first picture editor.

Based on Loengard’s long, successful career with photography, we’re going to have to agree with you, Hugh. The glass is absolutely half full.
